SALEM, Ore. -- Lawmakers in Oregon have voted against funding the Leaburg Fish Hatchery for two more years.

On Tuesday an amendment that would have funded the hatchery with $1.7 million in general fund money was introduced, but lawmakers in a subcommittee voted against it 5-3.

According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the US Army Corps of Engineers built the hatchery in the 1950s to restore lost trout habitat because of dams but ended its funding in 2018. At the time, the Legislature stepped in to provide interim funding through June 30 this year.
