EUGENE, Ore. – There’s been a change to Lincoln County’s mask police following a reported racist backlash.
Lincoln County is one of seven Oregon counties required to wear masks under the governor’s order, starting Wednesday.
The original policy allowed people of color to not wear masks to protect people from harassment.
But the county said the backlash was unprecedented and horrifically racist.
The county said they received calls from leadership from communities of color asking them to revise the policy, saying the exemption made them a target for further discrimination and harassment.
