HALSEY, Ore.-- Central Linn in Halsey will be holding a "drive-in" graduation as a way to honor their graduating class during the pandemic.

Principal Heidi Hermansen said she and her staff wanted to do something special for their 40 seniors. The plan is to move the graduation stage from the gym to the football field where cars will be parked around the track. Names will be read, speeches will be given, and students will be able to get out of their car and walk across the stage.

"It's still a celebration and we're still honoring our seniors and it's going to be a little different than in the gym like we usually hold it, but we still will have the important lurches so they can remember the day," Hermansen said.

Allison Crowell, a senior at Central Linn, said she misses school but never thought graduation would be canceled.

"I love going to school. We have a tight community, we have a tight faculty and staff," Crowell said. "I questioned what form of graduation if any we were going to have."

Hermansen said their seniors needed to celebrate their achievements after a rocky school year. She said there was a bomb scare, a shutdown because of the flu, and the passing of two staff members and one student.

Crowell said this graduation, though different, will mean more to the community than years before.

"I think this graduation will be more of celebrating for ourselves but recognizing the people in our community that we lost and letting the light shine for them," Crowell said.
