SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Local gym Elements Health Club has created Kids Fit, an online workout program so kids can get P.E. class-style exercise from home.
“I feel this is very important for our children to be able to get up and move,” Elements co-owner and Kids Fit creator Alexandra Schirra said.
Schirra created the program after Elements temporarily closed due to COVID-19. Her motive was to make something easy and fun for kids to stay active from the comfort and safety of their own homes.
“There’s squats, there’s burpees, there’s jumping jacks, there’s push-ups,” Schirra said.
The sessions are free and livestreamed three times per week on the gyms Facebook page. Each workout is different which Schirra says is important for children.
“To keep those kids guessing, they’re practicing different directions of moving their body all over the place,” Schirra said.
The training sessions have worked wonders for Eugene resident Mary Comstock and her daughter.
"I noticed a big difference in the couple days we haven't either gone outside or done the online workouts," Comstock said. "You can see that cooped up energy."
Elements even has special guests in its Kid Fit sessions, such as Sluggo the Eugene Emeralds mascot, adding a fun and interactive element to the workout.
“For this big, fun, fuzzy character to be live on your phone or on your screen or your tablet I think it inspires and it gets those kids to get up and moving as well with him.”
