SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Local police officers are upping patrols this week to watch for impaired driving.

Officers with the Springfield Police Department said they see an increase in drunk driving during the holidays.

Officer Tom Speldrich said alcohol slows your reaction time and impairs your decision making, so you should never get behind the wheel after drinking.

He said you should make arrangements on how to get home before your first drink.

"The biggest tip is to just plan ahead. If you know you're going to be going somewhere where you're going to have some drinks or you're going to use another substance that can impair you, plan ahead, figure out how you're going to get home. If getting home is going to be a problem, than plan on staying the night," said Officer Speldrich.

With the help of grant-funding, Springfield Police said they will have extra patrols out during the holidays to look for impaired drivers.

Other law enforcement agencies will also be upping patrols this week. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said from now through January 1st, they'll be conducting a traffic safety campaign focused on DUII enforcement.
