EUGENE, Ore. - More than a dozen of students in Eugene qualified for a state chess tournament in Portland.
The 51st Chess for Success State Chess Tournament is March 9 and 10 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.
Students took part in a regional tournament at Willamette High School February 10.
The qualifying results of that tournament include:
o Charlemagne Elementary, 4 students qualified as individuals as well as the team.
o Edgewood Community Elementary School, 1 student qualified as an individual.
o Roosevelt Middle School, 8 students qualified as individuals as well as the team.
o South Eugene High School, 2 students qualified as individuals.
o Willamette High School, 1 student qualified as an individual.
Chess for Success is a Portland-based non-profit that helps children succeed in school through learning chess.
The organization runs chess clubs in more than 78 schools throughout the state of Oregon and Southwest Washington serving more than 2,000 students.
