EUGENE, Ore.-- As we get closer to Election Day, some community members are stepping up to use their services to ensure that every vote counts.
Eugene Elite Taxi and Transportation, a women-owned and operated company, launched in February and was hit hard from the pandemic. However, they’re not letting that stop them from helping others who need it the most right now.
Now, they’re offering free rides to those in need of transportation to a ballot drop box.
“We’re here for our community,” Owner Jenna Jacober said. “When COVID first began, we were offering free rides for delivering medication, groceries and for the elderly community that were compromised. We’ll be here every time. Every time we’re needed. We’ll step up and help our community at no cost.”
The rides to the drop box are completely free. They said they’ll go anywhere -- no matter the distance.
“We know a lot of people were up the McKenzie that don't have a home,” Jacober said. “We will drive to McKenzie to bring people to turn in their ballots at no charge.”
Martina Schneberger is a driver for the company.
“A lot of people have been displaced and have lost their cars and ability to get around,” Schneberger said. “We would like to reach out to the community and help people get their ballots into the ballot box, so all of our votes can be counted. Every vote counts.”
Eugene Elite Taxi is offering rides to the drop box from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. They do need one day’s advance notice.
“We just want to help alleviate any stress, in way we can,” Jacober said. “I just think of how many eldery people I've met that are really having a hard time. I just want to make sure they feel confident they can get their vote in and not be stressed about that and know that they have someone who has their back.”
The company has a fleet of clean, brand new cars -- as well as responsible drivers. Jacober said they understand that it’s an overwhelming time for everyone, so the hope is that this act of service will allow everyone to feel reassured that they will have a chance to cast their ballot.
“It doesn't matter where your vote lies," Jacober said. "We will get you to the ballot. We want every vote to count.”
