EUGENE, Ore. – With unemployment rates at historic lows, some Eugene businesses are having trouble finding employees.

In October, the U.S. unemployment rate remained low at 3.6%, according to the United States Department of Labor's monthly jobs report. In September, national unemployment dropped to as low as 3.5%.

Here in Eugene, WorkSource Lane said the county's jobless rate is 4.1%. Although that's a little bit higher than the national average, this is still a historic low for Lane County.

However, when these unemployment numbers are low, companies have a smaller pool of people to choose from when hiring.

Small business owner Francine Austin said it's hard to come by not only employees but also quality ones too.

"I get most of the college students who apply, so they might not stay very long," Austin said. "They might stay for a semester, a year or so. Then they might go onto their careers, and I have to find new people."

On the other hand, many workers love having options to chose from.

George Curtis, a worker at Apel Excursions, said if you're not working, give it a try because it may be rewarding.

"After you get done with a work day, your're like, I just got off work, I feel great, I did a good job," Curtis said. "I can go eat a good meal, and you feel good about yourself."
