EUGENE, Ore. -- A man is in jail Tuesday, accused of stealing a UPS semi-truck with a 53-foot trailer and crashing it on County Farm Road.
Joshua Crump, 28, faces charges of unlawful use of a vehicle, third-degree robbery, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and hit and run.
Police said Crump stole the vehicle in the area of West 7th Avenue and Garfield Street around 1 a.m. The driver said he saw Crump in the cab of the truck, and when he tried to open the door, Crump shoved him backward. The man saw his truck head east on 7th Avenue.
An officer spotted the stolen semi in the area of Delta Highway and Green Acres Road and followed it east.
Police said the truck’s hydraulic lift was down and the rear doors were open, and sparks were flying. However, no packages were on board the truck at the time.
The truck headed north onto Matt Drive and then east on Guadalupe Way. Police said it hit a parked car and continued east toward County Farm Road, and Crump turned south. They said he ran over a large tree and shrubs and got stuck.
Police tried to break the driver’s side window with 40 mm sponge rounds without success. They said one officer broke the window with a baton and another used pepper spray to stop Crump in his attempt to drive away. They said Crump initially refused to get out of the vehicle but was quickly taken into custody.
Crump was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and then taken to the Lane County Jail.
