EUGENE, Ore. -- A man accused of theft was rescued from a storm drain on Tuesday after a police pursuit.

Lucas Ryan, 29, faces charges of second-degree theft, escape and two warrants.

Police said a suspect stole items from Hirons on 18th Avenue around 10:45 p.m. The man had a knife strapped to his hip and reports said he fought with a loss prevention officer, who saw him enter the Amazon Slough near E. 17th Avenue and Oak Street. Police lost sight of the man in the slough.

At about 3:15 p.m., a caller said a man was in the slough seeking help getting out. Officers brought in a police dog and drone and searched for the suspect. They said the man had hidden in a storm drain under the roadway at E. 17th Avenue and Pearl Street. The drain was about two feet in diameter.

Officers used the drone to keep the suspect from escaping, and Ryan surrendered and was taken into custody.

Eugene Springfield Fire assisted police.
