SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Police say a Springfield man had likely been drinking when he led police on a chase for several miles before crashing on Interstate 5 Thursday night.

Police arrested John Wilkinson, 55, on charges of DUII, reckless driving, elude by vehicle, reckless endangering and offensive littering.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. near Pioneer Parkway and Centennial Boulevard. Witnesses reported seeing a man throw a beer bottle out of his vehicle. When officers tried to speak with him, the man took off towards Glenwood, eventually ending up on I-5 headed south, police said.

Officers tried several times in various ways to get the man to stop, but failed. He kept driving until he suddenly veered off the highway and crashed into a cement barrier near Dillard Road south of Goshen, police say. His truck rolled several times. Firefighters with Pleasant Hill Goshen Fire & Rescue and South Lane Fire had to cut the vehicle open to get to him. Police say that Wilkinson told officers he was trying to end his life when he crashed into the barrier.

Wilkinson was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, and later taken to jail. He will be arraigned in Lane County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
