EUGENE, Ore. -- A former Lane Community College board member convicted of third-degree sexual abuse is on the ballot for the May 21 special election.

Philip Carrasco is running unopposed for the LCC Board of Directors Zone 5 position. He previously held the seat but quit after he was found guilty of the misdemeanor crime in April. A jury found him not guilty on a second charge of third-degree sexual abuse.

Court documents show Carrasco was arrested last year after he was accused of inappropriately touching a girl under the age of 18. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.

According to records filed with the Lane County Elections, Carrasco filed to run for re-election in February. Lane County clerk Cheryl Betschart told KEZI 9 News that candidates have until March 21 to withdraw their names from the race, meaning if Carrasco changed his mind after he quit and was found guilty, it was too late to take his name off the ballot.

Carrasco's attorney told KEZI her client has no comment but said he will not have to register as a sex offender and the charge could be expunged from his permanent record. While he's running unopposed, a write-in candidate could win if they get more votes.

Brett Rowlett, Director of Public Affairs at LCC, said they do not comment individual board races but said the board will be discussing the current Zone 5 vacancy at its May 16 meeting. Rowlett said it's the board's responsibility to appoint a replacement if any board position is left vacant after June 30.
