EUGENE, Ore. -- A man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car while crossing an intersection in Eugene that neighbors consider dangerous.
The crash happened right at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Chambers Street around midnight on Friday.
Police said the driver hit the 26-year-old man while he was crossing the street.
Staff with Eugene Public Works said from 2007 to 2015 there were 27 crashes at the intersection. Of those 27 crashes, there was one fatal crash.
In that crash, a pedestrian walking was killed.
At this time, this intersection hasn't been classified as a high injury crash intersection. However staff does consider both 18th Avenue and Chambers Street as high injury corridors.
KEZI spoke with one man who said he walks near the intersection every day.
"I’ve experienced cars just not stopping, not paying attention to the walk signs, just being too much of a hurry,” said George Rotkewicz. “It's a very dangerous intersection just because of the size of it, the amount of traffic. People just aren't paying attention to the pedestrians as much."
Police said the man crossing the street was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. They said the 82-year-old driver is cooperating with the investigation.
