EUGENE, Ore. -- A man was struggling in the water near Armitage Park in Eugene, when two nurses jumped out of their rafts to save him.

Eugene-Springfield Fire said that the man was at a well-known swimming hole on the river, about half a mile from the boat ramp at Armitage Park.

Two women, who are trained nurses, were floating by on rafts when they heard people yelling for help.

Bystanders said they jumped from their rafts and performed CPR until the crews showed up.

Lane County Search and Rescue took him by boat to Amitage Park, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the hospital.

The woman that called 911, Melissa Brundage, said it was a very fortunate circumstance.

"Those nurses, they didn't hesitate," Brundage said. "They were out instantly and they were performing CPR and compressions, and were able to communicate with me to communicate to 911 what they needed to help him hopefully survive this."

No word yet on how long he was in the water or what his current condition is.
