EUGENE, Ore -- Runners from every state are taking part in this year’s Eugene Marathon. Even though some may be thousands of miles away, they are supporting nonprofits in Lane County.

“So our mission is to find permanent and loving homes for every child waiting in the foster care system,” said Aurora Sherman, A Family For Every Child.

A Family For Every Child is just one local nonprofit the marathon is connecting with this year in its Eugene Has Heart campaign.

Runners sign up to raise money for one of five nonprofits including Relief Nursery, Love Inc of Central Lane County, CASA of Lane County, Girls on the Run, and A Family For Every Child.

“There are 10,000 children in Oregon in foster care right now, and 1,000 in Lane County,” Sherman said.

Donations to A Family for Every Child will provide help to children, families, and caseworkers in the foster care system.

Other runners have pledged to support other local charities.

“So this year our goal is 100 runners, we’re currently at 65,” said Justin Hanes, Eugene Marathon Event and Charity Coordinator.

So there is still time to sign up and raise money for whichever nonprofit you choose. If you meet the minimum fundraising goal you can run the races for free.

You don’t have to just be a runner to support local nonprofits.

“If you’re interested in donating to a charity of choice you can always do that on our CrowdRise platform. There are options just to make a simple donation, which actually goes a long way to these charities,” Hanes said.

The Eugene Marathon may only be a weekend of running, but Eugene Has Heart can make a difference in someone life for years to come.

“I’m just so grateful to the runners, to the community at large, to people that support the runners, and to those that are supporting our team. Their donations, their support, really does help make a difference here in Lane County and the foster care system. We really could not do this without them, without the Eugene Marathon, and without people like you. I’m just so grateful to everyone that has supported us for that,” Sherman said.
