BLUE RIVER, Ore. – In preparation for fire season, spring prescribed burns are set to begin in the McKenzie River Ranger District.

Officials said the burning is scheduled to begin as early as Wednesday and will continue into July.

The burns will take place near the Toketee Golf Course off Highway 126, Camp Yale off Highway 242, Robinson Lake, Foley Ridge, Olallie Creek, and Castle Rock.

Officials said over the next few months there could be smoke surrounding those areas. They also said it is important to be alert on forest roads because traffic could increase.

They said prescribed burning reduces hazardous fuels, minimizes the spread of pest insects and disease, removes unwanted species that threaten the ecosystem, promotes growth of trees and other plants, and allows fire crews to train and prepare for the upcoming fire season.
