MYRTLE POINT, Ore. – A hiker who fell while hiking the Doerner Fir Trail with his girlfriend has been found dead, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office says.

Hailey Huckabee, 23, of Roseburg called 911 just after 8 p.m. on March 7 reporting that her boyfriend, Daniel Dyer, 33, of Sutherlin had slipped on the rocks and fell into a creek near the falls.

It happened just after 4 p.m. Huckabee tried to help her boyfriend out of the water and fell in as well, deputies said. Dyer managed to push her to the shore, but she lost sight of him after that.

Deputies said she walked more than four miles barefoot to get cell reception to call 911.

When deputies arrived, they found Huckabee suffering from hypothermia and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Members from Dora-Sitkum and Myrtle Point fire departments responded to aid in the search for Dyer, but he was not found.

The search continued in the following days, and on March 9, the Bandon Fire Dive Rescue Team was lowered into the creek using a rope system and found Dyer’s body in a pool near the top of the falls.
