EUGENE, Ore. -- Northbound Interstate 5 was shut down just north of Cottage Grove Monday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash shut down all lanes of the freeway.
The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. and involved five vehicles, two being semi-trucks. The crash turned the interstate into a parking lot as drivers waited for hours. People got out of their cars, walked up and down the freeway, let their dogs use the restroom, and some parents tried to entertain their kids.
Vancouver, Washington, resident Liz Thornton was ready for traffic to get moving again.
“We got here just before 5 o’clock, and its almost 10 till 7 now,” she said.
The driver of the flipped semi-truck was air-lifted to a local hospital after rescue crews spent an hour trying to free him from the twisted vehicle. Portland resident Tim Cusick said the people he talked to were self-reflecting after seeing the severity of the wreckage.
“My wife and I picked up from people kind of the sense of being grateful that they were not part of that whole incident because it was very frightening,” he said.
