EUGENE, Ore. -- A mural showing Charles Landeros and a police officer in downtown Eugene has been vandalized.

Eugene police said they learned Tuesday morning that the mural -- which is at West 7th Alley and Willamette Street -- had been damaged overnight. A Facebook post showing the damage was sent to the department.

Charles Landeros was shot and killed by police after shooting at officers in front of Cascade Middle School in January 2019. While many supported the officers' actions, some raised concerns about how the conflict was handled.

“We are aware there has been heightened emotions surrounding the imagery depicted on the mural, regardless, the defacing of the mural is a crime and only serves to further divide this community at a time when we need to be coming together,” said Chief Chris Skinner.

Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit are investigating.
