EUGENE, Ore. -- The "My Breast Friend 5K" kicked off around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, with nearly 300 runners coming out in support.
Event organizers said they have raised about $13,000 benefiting the Oregon Cancer Foundation.
Friends of event organizer Kelly Barton said she started running just six years ago, and was diagnosed with cancer in January of this year.
Barton said getting through chemo and having such a great turnout for the event is unbelievable.
"It started out as part of the healing for me. You know, planning this event. But, it's become so much more, and it's overwhelming, the support."
Barton said she hopes the other cancer fighters at the race felt as supported as she did.
She will still have to have surgery to remove her tumor sometime in the near future.
