EUGENE, Ore. -- Three members of the same family were gunned down in broad daylight in the middle of a west Eugene street on Wednesday, police confirmed.
Rosalina Gonzalez, 70, Jorge Gabriel Gonzalez, 44, and Carlos David Gonzalez, 27, were all wounded in the shooting spree, which happened on Anthony Way.
Neighbors told KEZI 9 News that one of the family members was shot in the head, another was shot in the neck and another was shot in the chest.
Jorge Gonzalez is in a Portland-area hospital, while the other victims are listed in serious condition in RiverBend Hospital in Springfield, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Neighbors living on Anthony Way said this should have never happened to the Gonzalez family.
"They were very friendly of course and even hard working, I mean he never missed a day of work that I can figure," neighbor Gerald Aucoin said.
Some neighbors told KEZI 9 News that the Gonzalez family's actions after the shooting took place prove they care a lot about the neighborhood.
"(Another member of the Gonzalez family) was concerned about the (shooter's) mother and how she was all alone. He wanted to give her his sympathy and apologize and said he is praying for her and wishing her well," neighbor Kathy Pierce said.
Police identified the shooter as 66-year-old Carlos Alberto Angelo, who lived across the street from the Gonzalez family.
Neighbors say the shooting began as a dispute over leaves. They said Angelo was upset because a neighbor across the street was blowing leaves onto his property.
The dispute happened outside of residences in the 1900 block of Anthony Way.
Neighbor Jim Winsor said all parties involved in the dispute were normal people: "They were good people, I thought, and I think it was just a disturbance that triggered somebody."
After Angelo shot his victims, he returned to the porch of his house and killed himself.
"Without hesitation, he walked back across the street towards the individuals and point blank shot both of them in a split second. They both collapsed, and there were three people laying on the ground for all purposes lifeless when I saw them," said a neighbor who watched it all happen.
Gary Pierce, a neighbor who lives on Anthony Way, told KEZI 9 News that he knew Carlos Angelo personally.
"He goes to our church, he takes care of his mom and is a really quiet guy," Pierce said. "He is friendly. I see him every Sunday at church. It was just terrible, I mean something must have cracked. I think it was they were pushing leaves back and forth across the street and something just cracked."
One neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said he was at home watching TV when he heard a loud pop that he thought was a leaf blower backfiring.
He said he went back to watching TV, but then he heard people shouting. He went to look out his back room window and saw a man lying on the ground next to a leaf blower, and another man with a gun pointed at another man and a woman. He called 911 and then heard what he thinks was another shot.
He looked out his window again and saw the woman on the ground, and the two men were gone.
At that point, he said he moved to the other side of his house to take shelter.
"If you have problems like that with your neighbors, consider moving, consider taking a different attitude, do something. Don't go out and shoot them," said the man.
