COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- K-9 Hektor helped track a suspect who fired a weapon at someone and ran off into a wooded area near Cottage Grove on July 7, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

Hektor and his handler, Lane County Sherriff deputy Ray May, tracked the suspect in the dark through thick brush and trees. Hektor's sense of smell helped find the 53-year-old man hiding underneath a root wad.

The man was completely out of sight of searchers, and deputies said they probably would not have found the suspect if it wasn’t for Hektor.

Hektor joined the Lane County Sheriff's Office in 2018 and has been training with May to assist in locating suspects, searching for evidence and finding missing people.

The Lane County Sheriff;s Office said Hektor still has puppy-like playfulness when he isn’t in work mode. He is the son of retired Lane County Sheriff's Office K-9 Frits.
