EUGENE, Ore. -- A new gay bar will be opening this summer in downtown Eugene where the Wayward Lamb used to be.

KEZI spoke with Helen Shepard, the owner of the new bar that will be known as Spectrum.

Shepard said the LGBTQ community was devastated when Wayward Lamb abruptly closed back in February. Shepard said there are a handful of LGBTQ-friendly bars throughout downtown, however Wayward Lamb was the only bar in town that was by the queer community and for the queer community.

Shepard hopes Spectrum can fill the void Wayward Lamb left behind.

"It allows us to have a safe place,” Shepard said. “As much as we like to think the world has changed, there are still some people who are victims of violence because of their gender and sexuality, and so we need a place where we can go and say I know I'm among likeminded individuals, I know I'm safe, I know this is my culture and my space to feel safe."

Shepard said they plan to have their grand opening on July 28.
