ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A new housing development on NE Douglas Avenue will soon house 68 veterans and low-income families.
NeighborWorks Umpqua, a nonprofit organization, will soon start construction on Deer Creek Village, the largest multi-family complex built in Roseburg since 2013.
The apartments will have studios, one and two bedroom units and will cater to anyone who has trouble finding a home due to their work history, a disability or their income.
Karen Reed, the project manager for NeighborWorks Umpqua, said they're excited about the project because they’ll be serving more people than they already are.
“It takes a long time for those type of developments to be able to break ground, and you know, people are waiting,” Reed said.
Officials also said the project will help address the housing shortage in Roseburg.
According to a recent analysis for the city, the population is expected to grow to 35,000 by 2039.
In response, the city is expecting to build nearly 2,000 housing units in the next 20 years, or 134 units every year.
