CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University’s new police department will be taking over at the start of 2021, the university said in a statement this week.
Officials said the Department of Public Safety “is evolving to support a safe and welcoming OSU Corvallis campus environment.
The new OSU Police Department will take over policing responsibilities from Oregon State Police on Jan. 1. The long-standing agreement with OSP ends Dec. 31.
Officials with OSP announced in October 2019 they planned to end the contract due to a decline in law enforcement resources and said troopers are needed at statewide offices. However, the announcement also came weeks after a state trooper’s arrest of a 21-year-old Black student near campus was captured on camera and went viral, causing controversy over the presence of troopers on campus.
OSU officials said if you have an emergency, call 911, and if you would like to call for a nonemergency response or to report a concern, call 541-737-3010.
The university said they are “building a department dedicated to accountability, transparency, and inclusive community engagement that supports safety for all."
