EUGENE, Ore. -- The annual holiday lights were not put up in the Eugene park blocks this year.
Eric Brown, Eugene's downtown manager, said putting the lights in the downtown trees is expensive, because the city pays a private contractor to put them up in the trees.
Instead of doing that this year, the city distributed them to 20 businesses in the downtown area to be used to light up their store fronts. Making these changes saved the city thousands of dollars, Brown said.
One of the businesses to use the lights this year is Manifest Beer Company. An employee said the lights add a sense of normalcy and bring holiday cheer to her business during a year that hasn't been so cheerful.
