EUGENE, Ore. -- Fifty ninth-grade students from North Eugene High School left the classroom on Friday to dig in the dirt at the Grass Roots Garden as part of the school’s annual Day of Caring.

The students harvested vegetables and planted new ones. Organizers say the community service day teaches the students a valuable lesson in giving back and can also lead to job opportunities.

“We just had students talking to the people with Food for Lane County and they're asking questions,” said Matt Sharey, a teacher at North Eugene High School. “'How can I volunteer this summer?' 'What are your hours?' 'Can we come back?' And just to see that level of real-world engagement is really special.”

Students also spent time volunteering at the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery, HIV Alliance and many more organizations. Organizers say over 250 students took part in the event overall. 75 volunteers from Windermere Real Estate also helped out at the Grass Roots Garden.
