BANDON, Ore. -- Oregon Department of Transportation officials announced Monday night that a single lane of Highway 42S is open to traffic.

The highway had been closed five miles east of Bandon since April 10 when flooding in the area caused 50 feet of paved highway to collapse.

ODOT said over the weekend crews installed a 4-foot diameter culvert 25 feet below the road surface, filling the hole with 1,800 tons of rock. They said the new culvert will not only make it less likely to get blocked by storm debris than the previous pipe, it will also allow fish to pass through.

The repair is expected to cost $118,000, and it's expected to be done by later this week.

Flaggers are going to be in the area helping with traffic control until the second lane gets fully paved.
