CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State University is now requiring vaccinations in light of the sixth case of meningococcal disease since November 2016.

A 21-year-old OSU student was diagnosed with the disease after being hospitalized on December 17, 2017.

Health officials don't know which strain it is yet.

They are urging undergraduate students, 25-years-old and younger, to be vaccinated for meningococcal B disease during winter break.

"Oregon State University takes the health and welfare of its students, employees and the general public very seriously," said Steve Clark, OSU vice president for university relations and marketing. "Effective immediately, Oregon State University will require all of its Corvallis students 25 and younger to be vaccinated for meningococcal B disease by Feb. 15."

Previously, the university only encouraged its students to be vaccinated.
