SPRINGFIELD, Ore.-- A Springfield police officer was hospitalized after a driver hit his police car Sunday, entrapping him.
According to the Springfield Police Department, the officer was responding to a different crash at 4:52 p.m. when a driver didn't stop at a stop sign at the intersection of F Street and Pioneer Parkway and hit the side of the police car. The driver allegedly drove away from the site of the crash.
Authorities say the officer was trapped by an airbag in the patrol car but used an emergency car escape tool to free himself. Area residents helped the officer get out of the car. He was hospitalized and treated for minor injuries.
According to police, a witness to the crash followed the suspect's vehicle as they fled and told officials where the driver parked the vehicle and fled on foot.
Once located, police said the driver wasn't compliant and attempted to escape officers before being arrested.
Authorities believe that alcohol and drugs were involved in the crash and are investigating the incident.
