EUGENE, Ore. -- Search and Rescue officials urge caution as water levels begin to rise.

"Rivers are going to be up for the next few days," said Tim Chase, the search and rescue coordinator for the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. "They've already come up a fair amount and with the weather we have coming, we can expect them to come up a little bit more."

Chase said fast moving waters and downed trees from this year's historic snow storm are among the biggest concerns.

"Any kinds of debris might be in the water," he said. "Things that have gotten flushed up and are getting moved down stream and all those could add up to be a hazard for boaters."

He said the snow storm is one of the biggest reasons we're seeing high water levels right now.

"Wear a life jacket...all the time, whenever you're on the water," he said. "It's just like wearing a seat belt in your car. You never expect to get into an accident, but you certainly don’t have time to put on your seat belt when you're getting into an accident."

Along with life jackets, Chase said be aware of any new challenges on the water even if you think you know what's out there.

"Places have always been really benign stretch of water might have some new hazards that arise...some logs or root logs, things that might be dangerous to a boater."
