EUGENE, Ore. – One person was killed in a mobile home fire early Saturday morning and one neighbor said it was matter of time.

Fire crews responded to the Daneland Mobile Home Park on North Terry Street around 3:30 a.m. residents said the flames could be seen from miles away.

Officials said The person who died was in a home that was destroyed and no one else was in the home at the time.

Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Amy Linder with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department said there were no other injuries, but said some pets may have also died.

"We have found some animal cages but have not been able to confirm how many or what type of animals that may have been living here," Linder said.

Carole Aguirre lives next door; her home was also damaged in the fire and is saddened by her neighbor's death.

"I really don't remember all of it because I went into a little shock," said Aguirre. "He was an odd sort of sweet person, a free spirit."

But Aguirre said she knew someday this would happen.

"He was kind of a hoarder," Aguirre said. "He had an awful lot of stuff out in his yard, in his house, you couldn't walk through it."

Aguirre says the fire department has been called to the home before and said they pointed out some fire hazards caused by the clutter.

Linder said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. She said they educate the public on the dangers of fire hazards on private property, but in most cases, they can't do any enforcement.

"The amount of material certainly creates an additional fuel load and helped the fire burn bigger and faster," Linder said, but in terms of it being a contributing origin or causes, we are not that far into the investigation yet."

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
