SWEET HOME, Ore. -- Oregon Jamboree festival staff are expecting to host between 10 and 12,000 people for a weekend of food, music, and games.

The festival started Friday in Sweet Home.

"I'm feeling pretty safe and you know you're outside and I'm just feeling like it's time to get out and live," attendee Corrine Verna said.

Last year, the three-day event was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. This year there is an overwhelming feeling that people have done their part and have earned the right to hold events like these.

"We've done what's been asked of us -- to get vaccinated. A lot of people are vaccinated now," said Tracy Lewis, a Salem resident.

Linn County, where Sweet Home is located, has one of the lower vaccination rates in the state for people 18 years and older -- about 57 percent.

Many KEZI spoke to on Friday said they're not concerned about the spread of the coronavirus. They're more focused on enjoying some of the things they've missed out on over the course of the pandemic.

"I think everybody's so relieved that [the festival is] taking place," Lewis said.

Several people who were in the area shared similar feelings.

Festival staff said they'll provide hand sanitizing stations and socially distanced areas. Also, dozens of the vendors that would normally be inside of the venue were relocated to the surrounding streets in an attempt to lessen overcrowding.

The event is scheduled to go until Sunday.
