SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon legislators are prepared to offer $2 billion in additional revenue for schools as teachers are preparing a walkout next month to protest the state's chronic disinvestment in its education system.

Members of the Joint Committee on Student Success said on Thursday that the money will go toward educational and mental health services to help boost student performance.

Half of the funds will go toward early childhood education and other statewide educational initiatives.

The remaining $1 billion will go directly to schools. Districts will have to lay out exactly how they plan to spend the money and must promise to use some of the funds toward mental and behavioral health services.

Teachers said they are encouraged by the plan but did not confirm whether they would call off a walkout set for May.
