SALEM, Ore. -- Oregon's unemployment rate fell to 11.2% in June, which is down 3% from May.

The Oregon Employment Department released its new numbers Tuesday and they show a positive trend in positive job growth as businesses start to reopen.

However, 234,00 thousand Oregonians are still out of work. As coronavirus cases grow around the country, there is a threat of another shutdown to slow the spread. If another shutdown happens, this could put thousands of people out of work again.

When it comes to the unemployment rates in our local counties, four out of five are above the statewide average:

  • Benton: 10.1%
  • Coos: 17.8%
  • Douglas: 15.4%
  • Lane: 14.7%
  • Linn: 13.5%

Since May, about one-third of Oregon's job force has returned to work. Leisure and hospitality saw the biggest gain with more than 31,000 jobs, while health care and social assistance are up more than 6,000.
