ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The fourth annual Umpqua Strong run has been canceled.

Organizers said the run, which has been held at Stewart Park every September, is a way to honor the victims of the Umpqua Community College shooting in 2015 while raising money for the community.

Since starting the event in 2016, the organization has raised $117,000 for scholarships and other organizations in Roseburg.

However, this year organizers said they were unable to gather enough volunteers for the planning committee. They said it takes around 10 to 20 volunteers to plan the event each year, and this year, they only had four people committed.

Nick Campbell, a participant from last year, said he didn’t realize how much it took to put on an event like this until he ran the 5K.

“Finding out the event wasn’t happening this year because of a lack of participating from the people who organize the event, I was like wow,” said Campbell. “This isn’t just something that happens overnight. People have to go out and do it.”

Lynette McAllister, a board member for Umpqua Strong, said it was a hard decision to cancel the event.

“It doesn’t take a few people, it takes a lot. We’re very thankful for the people who come out the day of or the day before, but we need planning people to plan the event and organize it.”

However, organizers said this doesn’t stop them from putting on the event next year and in the future. Right now, McAllister said Umpqua Strong board members are already planning for next year and hope that they will gain more volunteers by next September.
