EUGENE, Ore. -- With cool temperatures and rainfall, officials are preparing for ecological burns to begin next week in the west Eugene wetlands.

The burns are conducted each year by the Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Land Management, City of Eugene, Fish and Wildlife Service, Lane County and the Nature Conservancy to protect and restore biological diversity in prairie and savanna ecosystems.

Experienced and trained crews will manage the controlled burns of 1,000 acres from September to October.

Individual burn units range from less than an acre to 130 acres.

The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency will only burn on days where the forecast shows wind blowing smoke away from residential areas.
