ALBANY, Ore. – Two teens were arrested after hate speech escalated into violence, Albany Police Chief Marcia Harnden said.

Three other teens are still outstanding in the case.

Four 16-year-old boys and one 15-year-old girl reportedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy at Swanson Park, 712 Jackson Street SE, at about 6 p.m. on April 13.

Harnden said that the 13-year-old stood up to hate speech.

“This crime shows the ugliness of hate that exists in our society today and has no place in the City of Albany or any community. I ask our community and especially the parents of our kids to have honest discussions about treating others with dignity and respect,” Harnden said.

One of the boys and the girl have been arrested at this time, police said. They were taken to the Linn Benton Juvenile Detention Center. They both face charges of third-degree assault and criminal conspiracy. The girl also faces charges of coercion and second-degree bias crime, and the boy also faces charges of first-degree bias crime.

Police thanked Greater Albany Public Schools for their assistance with the investigation, which is ongoing.

Detectives are seeking information on an unknown female driver that was involved in the incident.
