Police: Black man severely injured in Eugene bias crime

EUGENE, Ore. – An arrest has been made after a Black man was targeted for his race in Eugene, police say.

The incident happened in the area of West 11th Avenue and Grant Street on Aug. 31. Police said Marcus Crowe, 36, of Eugene and a woman were yelling racially offensive terms in the area when the victim, a man in his late 20s, asked them to stop.

Crowe then assaulted the man, throwing a sharpened metal pole or spear-like object at him, police said. The victim suffered a severe, penetrating wound. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said Crowe faces charges of second-degree assault and second-degree bias crime.
