SWEET HOME, Ore. -- A traffic stop turned high-speed pursuit became an armed standoff Friday night, Sweet Home police said.

Just after 8 p.m. police posted on Facebook advising residents to avoid the Clark Mill Road area.

Police said they received a report of a disturbance and possible assault at about 5:30 p.m., and officers responded to the 2200 block of Ironwood Street and saw a man leaving in a vehicle. Police said they tried to stop the car, and a pursuit ensued.

According to police, the man stopped on Clark Mill Road and got out with an AR-style rifle. He refused to comply with officers or communicate. Linn-Benton SWAT responded to assist.

Authorities now have control of the scene, police said.

As of 11:30 p.m. on Friday, SWAT was still attempting to negotiate with the man.
