EUGENE, Ore. -- Police have identified a man who walked into a Eugene hospital with a gunshot wound and later died.
Jeffrey Chaney, 39, arrived to University District Hospital, 1255 Hilyard Street, at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police said. He died of his injuries.
"He was just a really good guy," said Kelly Hall, the grandmother of Chaney's 10-year-old son. "He had a heart of gold and he didn't deserve what happened to him -- you know like, for somebody to shoot him like that."
Hall said she was in disbelief when she learned what had happened to Chaney. She said he was a well-liked and funny guy who would have given the shirt off his back to help others if they asked.
"He could make anybody laugh because of his silliness and stuff and the way he was. He was just a great guy you know the heart of gold, he'd help anybody out," Hall said.
Chaney grew up in Southern California's Riverside, Hall said. He moved to Oregon about two years ago. Hall said he dated her daughter for about eight years and felt like a son to her. His son is currently being cared for by Chaney's mother in Oregon, according to Hall.
Police are investigating the death. No additional information about what happened leading up to Chaney's death has been released.
