Armed, suicidal man taken into custody at Eugene parking garage

The man was taken into custody on a noncriminal hold.

EUGENE, Ore. -- An armed, suicidal man was taken into custody at a parking garage in Eugene Tuesday night.

Police said the man called police at about 5:30 p.m. saying he had taken pills. He was dangling his legs from the 5th floor on the east side of the structure at W. 10th Avenue and Willamette Street.

The man was reportedly waving a handgun over the edge.

During hte incident, the Eugene Public LIbrary, Lane Transit District and Downtown Athletic Club sheltered in place.

Traffic was blcoked, and police responded to the scene. The public was urged to avoid the area.

At about 6 p.m., the man came off the ledge and put the gun down, but it was still within reach, police said. The crisis negotiation team worked to get him farther away from the gun.

He was taken into custody on a noncriminal hold.
