EUGENE, Ore. -- Police say a vehicle was destroyed in a high-speed DUII crash in Eugene just after 1 a.m. Sunday, and the driver and passenger survived with minor injuries.

Anthony Patchill, 23, was arrested for a DUII, criminal mischief in the first degree, reckless driving, reckless endangering and assault in the second degree.

The crash happened on East 33rd and Willamette Street, in the U.S. Post Office parking lot.  Patchill was reportedly going more than 90 miles per hour when he came down the hill and lost control.

The Toyota Hatchback went straight through about 60 feet of a wrought iron metal fence and came to a halt with severe damage.

Sgt. Sam Stotts of Eugene police, said the lack of major injuries was a testament to the technology in new cars.

"Had this been a car that was 15 or 20 years older there could've been a fatality here," Stotts said.

Witnesses said they were shocked when they saw what happened.

"Being up close and just seeing the parts of the car just strewn out, it seemed like it would've been a lot worse, so modern technology saved some lives that night," said resident Jason Waldrip

Waldrip said he was driving home around 1:30 a.m. after picking up his girlfriend from downtown. He saw the flashing lights and went to find out what was happening.

“It goes to show that no matter what age you are, don’t drink and drive," Waldrip said.

One Eugene resident said that even with the new car technology, the level of damage done will cause lasting consequences.

“If it happened during the day or if there were people walking there in the evening, they wouldn't fare so well," Stephen Kimberly said.
