CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Benton County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss the location for the cold-weather homeless shelter following pushback from business owners in the area.

A possible location at SW 2nd Street and SW Western Boulevard in downtown Corvallis is being considered for the shelter.

County commissioners say they recently withdrew their $60,000 funding match for the shelter because of the controversy surrounding that location.

"We have people who ... the same behavior, exchanging drugs, defecating, and many people with those services provided in this family area here ... we're going to see an impact with all of our businesses, impact with the neighborhood, impact with downtown," said Kent Buys, owner of Troubadour Music Center in Corvallis.

Buys says although he is not in favor of the SW 2nd Street location, he hopes the city can work out another location to provide services for the homeless.

Commissioners say they will continue to vet ideas for different locations ahead of their July 10 meeting.
