EUGENE, Ore.-- Local businesses were reaping the benefits of an especially busy Memorial Day weekend in Eugene.

People came from all over the world for the historic Prefontaine Classic track meet and the NCAA super regional softball game.

A revenue manager with The Phoenix Inn Suites said Friday that they had doubled up staff to accommodate the amount of people that would come through Eugene over the weekend.

"We're double staffed. Our housekeeping staff has a lot of housekeepers here but for front desk we're double staffed all weekend. People who are here to set up Pre Classic obviously come here ahead of time and runners are usually coming in on Thursday and Friday," Courtny Osuna said.

She added that it was special to be a part of history, as the weekend's meet would be the last in historic Hayward Field before upcoming renovations. "The last Pre Classic at Hayward Field before it gets remodeled... just a classic event, a classic stadium... historic," Osuna said.

Athletes also recognized the historic aspect that came along with the meet. KEZI 9 News spoke to a Nike athlete, Reece Prescod, about what it meant to run at Hayward Field. "I've obviously watched this place growing up as a kid. I mean I've watched Justin Gatley win the 100 meters here quite a few times. The World Junior Championships were here when I was younger so you know, to actually be here and not just be watching it and actually be competing, I think it's going to be a great experience and opportunity," Prescod said.

The meet kicked off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and events will end around 8 p.m. Saturday.
