EUGENE, Ore. – The Bethel School District discussed the presence of law enforcement in schools in their Monday meeting.

Board members said the relationship the district has with the Eugene Police Department isn’t what they hoped to have at this point.

They discussed the history of why school resource officers were created, if they still serve the same purpose, and what the current needs are in schools.

They acknowledged it is a complicated topic, and said if the officers stay, changes will be made.

There is an annual expense of $122,000 to pay for one officer and one sergeant.
