ROSEBURG, Ore. -- As the COVID-19 spike continues in Douglas County, public health officials worry community members are not doing their part.

The county reported a record-breaking 33 cases Tuesday. Public health officer Bob Dannenhoffer said the case count wasn’t as high Wednesday, but he is still concerned it will get worse.

“Cases are coming in very quickly,” he said. “So there is a lot of disease in many parts of the county.”

As the case numbers grew over the last few weeks, Dannenhoffer said they have found that the virus has become very widespread in the county.

He said people are getting it from places they once thought were safe.

“It’s difficult to tell where people got it from,” he said. “For example, in one of our communities here, there are six different places where there are disease, so it would be hard to tell where of the six you got it from.”

He also said a majority of the cases come from large gatherings and travel, which are two things he said he has strongly advised against since March.

“We have recent cases this week from Texas and California that spread to areas of the county that previously had not much disease,” he said.

Dannenhoffer said he understands people are getting "pandemic fatigue" as the pandemic continues on. He said this is not the time to relax, especially with case numbers rapidly growing.

However, with the two-week freeze now in place, Dannenhoffer said he hopes people use it as an opportunity to take the safety guidelines more seriously.

“There is a great vaccine right on the horizon, two of them, right on the horizon,” he said.
