EUGENE, Ore. – Several Red Cross workers in Oregon are helping people affected by the Kilauea volcano eruption in Hawaii, both on the frontlines and online.

Ten disaster responders from Oregon are on the ground in Hawaii, working in shelters, providing food and water, and helping with healthcare.

The Red Cross has five shelters open on the Big Island, where more than 130 people spent Monday night. More than 70 homes have been destroyed by the lava so far.

In Eugene, one volunteer is providing tech support from more than 2,500 miles away.

Hannah Bean is an in-take processor. When people sign up to volunteer with the Red Cross, she helps guide those applicants through the volunteer process.

“It’s a specialized position,” Bean said. “You have to have quite a bit of training.”

Bean said she’s processed dozens of volunteer applications for help in Hawaii. She said the Red Cross created in-take positions like hers about two years ago.

To donate to the volcano relief efforts, call 1-800 RED CROSS or text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.
