EUGENE, Ore. -- Illegal camping and trash along Amazon Creek is raising concerns for some Eugene residents, and the city says they're working on handling the issue.

Debbie and Alan lived in Portland before moving to the area. They said they left because they couldn't stand campers harassing them and leaving trash by their property. Now, they say Eugene is starting to feel the same.

Homeless campers and trash aren't staying in the creek -- they're also blocking parts of the sidewalk on West 11th Avenue above it. Many residents told KEZI 9 News that needs to change before matters get worse.

Brian Richardson with Eugene Public Works said the Oregon Department of Transportation is the lead on this specific area because they own the Beltline. However, the city will be closely working with ODOT to remove illegal campers and the trash from the area.

He said they first got a call about the problem on Sunday, and a cleanup is scheduled for next week.
