ROSEBURG, Ore.--Some residents of the Budget 16 Motel said they are shaken up about the shooting incident that left three people injured.
An investigation revealed that a 36-year-old man died of his injuries at the scene. A 44-year-old woman and a 40-year-old woman were also shot.
The 44-year-old woman was later transported to Riverbend Hospital in Springfield, and eventually to OHSU in Portland. She is being treated for life threatening injuries at this time. The 40-year-old woman sustained significant injuries, but they are non-life-threatening.
According to court documents, Michael Benson, 36, was the person killed.
Budget 16 resident Paul Field told KEZI 9 News that Benson was a permanent resident of the motel. He said Benson lived there with his girlfriend and kids.
Field said the girlfriend was one of the women injured. The other woman was the couple’s friend who was visiting them at the motel and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I (saw) a guy walking off,” said Field. “I guess the gunman. Then next thing I know he’s heading toward the road with a rifle.”
Devin Lee McNamara, 33, of Roseburg was arrested in relation to the shooting. He is being held in jail on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of first-degree assault.
Another resident said everyone living at the Budget 16 Motel knows each other well. Before the shooting, he said no one knew who McNamara was.
He said shootings like this are not common at the motel.
“We don’t have stuff like that happen around here, that’s for sure,” said resident Chris Foster. “I got home right after it happened, I didn’t see what happened but when I got here the cops were here and he was arrested."
Field said he knew Benson and his girlfriend well. He said they were very kind people and did everything they could to help out others.
“Mike was a good guy,” he said. “Him and Spring both were. They would do anything for anybody.”
